Piedmont WWTP Upgrade
Owner: Water Works, Gas, & Sewer Board of the City of Piedmont
Project Stage: Complete
Award Winner: Engineering Excellence State Award Winner, American Council of Engineering Companies of Alabama
Description: The 1 MGD wastewater treatment plant had become overloaded and was unable to meet the discharge permit requirements mandated by the Alabama Department of Environmental Management. The existing 24-acre stabilization lagoon was frequently experiencing hydraulic overload. Additionally, the facility could not meet the more stringent ammonia nitrogen limits that were about to be placed on the receiving stream, Nances Creek. The operating depth of the pond was increased from four feet to six feet, to provide a 30-day retention capacity. BOD removal was enhanced by dividing the single cell lagoon into three cells. A 54-foot diameter nitrification tower with growth media and rotary distributor was added for ammonia removal. Flow from the tower is post-aerated before discharged into Nances Creek.
